Crossing the continental divide from Como to Breckenridge, Colorado, Boreas Pass was a narrow gauge railroad until 1937, and in 1956 it was converted to an automobile road. The Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad rails reached the summit of Boreas Pass in late 1881, Breckenridge in September 1882, and Leadville by December 1884. In 1889, the DSP&P became known as the Denver, Leadville, and Gunnison RR and by 1899 the DL&G became known as Colorado Southern RR and remained so until 1937. In 1993 the USDA Forest Service began restoration projects on the old historic RR line to include the section house on the summit, an unaltered short grade at Rocky Point with relaid rails, and the Baker Tank water tower. The Combo roundhouse, which is on private property, has also been restored. |
